Saint John, New Brunswick: Investing in the education of our youth is an investment we are proud to make. Canaport LNG is delighted to provide a $10,000 donation to The Gaia Project, a program offering unique, hands on experiential learning that provides students with the resources they need to take local action that will impact the global challenge of climate change.
Focusing on energy and climate literacy, career planning and STEAM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills, The Gaia Project offers programs for elementary, middle and high schools across New Brunswick. In partnership with Canaport LNG’s PALS school, Forest Hills School, Gaia delivered the Trash Trackers program, a waste audit program designed to allow students the opportunity to examine their waste impact and discover first hand what could have been recycled or composted instead of going to the landfill. Other classes participated in the Energy Detectives, Energy Engineers and Electrify Your Ride programs, all aimed at investigating energy consumption and reduction, learning about sustainable transportation, and the smart energy grid.

It provides enhanced learning opportunities for students through hands on activities and it really shows the kids how their daily actions have an impact on the environment and how small changes in their day to day routines can make a big difference,” said Kate Shannon, Senior Communications Advisor for Canaport LNG. “Reducing our terminal’s environmental footprint has always been a priority for us; we continuously focus on energy efficiency and managing our greenhouse gas emissions. These programs are teaching the importance of those same objectives and we are really pleased to support The Gaia Project in their mandate.”

The Gaia Project is a New Brunswick based charity with the mission to empower youth to take action on climate change for a healthy environment. In the 2017-2018 school year, Gaia ran 143 projects, worked with 5301 students and visited 52 schools.
